Dear Marie,

What a wonderful surprise to open the unexpected package at my door and find your book of beautiful poems, [Blossom].  I sat right down to  look through it and didn't put it down for almost an hour.   What I  read made me laugh, made me cry and even made me think.  Thank you for sharing yourself and your thoughts with others....  Thank you again for what seems to me like the perfect Easter gift.

Fondly, Ann M.

2nd Annual Gala
A Tribute to the Hispanic Woman
Houston January 19, 2008

Mrs.  Marie Delgado Travis

Dear Marie:

On behalf of Sucesos, the Newspaper of the Hispanic Community, we would like to formally invite you to its upcoming Second Annual Gala, “A Tribute to the Hispanic Woman”, commemorating the International Women’s Day.

The extraordinary job you have done has motivated us to include you in the “Literature Woman of the Year” list, and would like you to join us in the ceremony on Saturday March 7, at 7:00 p.m. The event will take place at the Crown Plaza Hotel (290 and Pinemont), where we will be also awarding some other great hispanic women. These women have left their mark, in literature, arts, and the community in general.

This year’s Gala will have as special guest speaker, Mrs. Lorena Bobbit, from “Lorena’s Red Wagon Foundation.” She will be sharing her experiences as a victim from domestic violence. For Woman of the Year 2009, Mrs. Irene Porcarello, President of the Houston Community College Southeast, has been selected.

It will be a pleasure and an honor to have you with us on that special day. We understand you are in a constant commitment with the community, still we know you will do all your best to be part of this ceremony.  There will be an exquisite dinner followed by lived music.

Sincerely,

Lizzette Diaz

Hi Marilu,
I dont have time to write much, but I wanted to send you a quick email to let you know that I just finished reading your book (LA VENTANA / THE WINDOW), and it touched me so much I felt compelled to write a review on Amazon. I often felt a connection with you and wasn't sure what it was, now I know that God put us together for a reason. Here's what I wrote just in case it's not up yet:

I just want to personally thank the author of this book for giving abused women a voice. Her beautiful poems express the sentiments of women who experience a marriage filled with violence. Her use of imagery, symbolism and lyrical writing, reveals the dark side of this ever increasing problem without directly detailing the ugliness of such tragedies. As a child, growing up in an abusive and controlling environment, I often wondered what my mother was thinking and could not comprehend why she allowed herself to be treated so badly by the men she married. This book gave her a voice and helped me understand the emotions she went through, along with the feeling of being trapped in a cage where her "blind and deaf master couldn't hear her sing." My favorite poems were, Delicious Love, Time, Labyrinth, The Wedding, Promise, The Little Caged Bird , Offering, Cowardice, and Metamorphosis . Thank you for helping me understand my mother better, Ms. Travis. May you continue bringing awareness to this issue and I wish you all the best.

Love and blessings,

Subject: Your poem to my soul

Hola Marie,

Your poem ("Abolengo") touched me to the core. I can't say I'm a genuine Latino as truly as you are, but I do feel I am. Three hundred years of Spanish rule in my country, the Philippines so named after Felipe II, molded us into who and what we are; yet, unlike most Latinos we hardly flicker with a sign that deep inside we share Latino passions. Perhaps one reason is that we don't speak Spanish though our language is littered with Spanish words. We go to school to learn Spanish and perhaps because subconsciously we know it, we learn it with some ease. I hardly recognized my Latino heritage until I signed up for a fiction writing class in New York. First, my classmates noted my Spanish name. Second, and more revealing than my name, they read in my pieces my Latino heritage. I wasn't even conscious I was writing from my soul. Thanks again for your beautiful poem. I read it out aloud and felt my being rise.

Marie,
You are a gifted poet and your poem ("Abolengo") captures the essence of who you are and what you have to offer. I was moved by your poem and the spirit of la gente that is portrayed. As a Latina who connects with the poetic voice of expression, I truly appreciate your offering to nuestra communidad.

Dear Madam,

Kind regards
